John is Presidential Professor of Sociology and History at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, and Director of its Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies. He is the author or editor of many books, including The Invention of the Passport: Surveillance, Citizenship, and the State (Cambridge UP, 2000; 2nd edition 2018); Making Whole What Has Been Smashed: On Reparations Politics (Harvard UP, 2006); Legal Integration of Islam: A Transatlantic Comparison (with Christian Joppke; Harvard UP 2013); Transformations of Warfare in the Contemporary World (edited with David Jacobson; Temple University Press, 2016); and, most recently, The Three Axial Ages: Moral, Material, Mental (Rutgers University Press, 2017). When he is not writing or teaching, or spending time with his two dynamite daughters, he plays tennis and tries to surf.
